CloseWe have all grown accustomed to communion as a rite within the church. Often our thoughts focus on our individual relationship with God. Our sin. His life, death and resurrection for me. But is this what Jesus intended when he instituted communion with his disciples or did he have a more regular and common place practice in mind? Communion is not just a ritual. It is an invitation into koinonia with God and with one another. Koinonia fellowship doesn’t just need to be restored between us and God; it needs to be restored amongst the body of Christ, the church. Communion is a time of reunification. Scripture and the early church practice shows that we need to restore relationships with others before taking communion or we defile communion, not just for us, but for the whole community. Communion is about restoring relationships. Scriptures referenced: John 6:47-59; Exodus 16; Acts 2:42; Luke 22:14, 17, 18-20; 1 Corinthians 10:14-22; Matthew 5:23-24.
